Radiographic testing RT

A volumetric non-destructive testing method that uses X-ray radiation to detect and locate internal discontinuities — from classic radiography to DDA digital imaging.

Digital radiography in practice

We treat digital radiography as the quality standard

X-TEST performs accredited radiographic testing with DDA digital detectors. The technology captures the radiographic image directly in digital form and allows it to be analysed in depth. We have many years of experience in testing welded joints and castings, including evaluating indications against ASTM digital reference catalogues.

About radiographic testing

Radiography uses ionising radiation to image the internal structure of a component and to detect discontinuities such as gas pores, inclusions, lack of penetration, casting imperfections and changes in material thickness, including corrosion loss.

RT is widely used to inspect welded joints, castings and components of complex geometry. Whether the method can be applied depends on factors such as the material, the thickness and geometry of the component and access to the area under test.

In digital radiography with DDA detectors the image is captured directly in digital form, which allows fast evaluation, archiving and measurement of indications on the image.

Method characteristics

Radiographic testing uses X-ray or gamma radiation, whose attenuation depends on the thickness, density and type of material, among other factors. Differences in absorption make it possible to image the internal structure of the component and reveal discontinuities such as gas pores, inclusions, lack of penetration, voids and casting imperfections.

📡

How it works

The radiation source is positioned so that the beam passes through the area under test and reaches the detector or radiographic film. Differences in attenuation form a radiographic image on which indications can be located and evaluated.

Depending on the technique, the image is recorded on radiographic film or directly in digital form with a DDA detector.

Advantages of the method

  • Detects internal discontinuities without damaging the component
  • Clear image of the internal structure of the area under test
  • Suitable for welded joints, castings and components of complex geometry
  • Permanent record of the test result
  • Digital analysis, measurement and archiving of images with DDA
