A licence to act as a Radiological Protection Officer within an organisation is required wherever devices generating ionising radiation operate — such as X-ray tubes, spectrometers or flash lamps — and wherever isotope sources are present (industrial radiography, smoke detectors).
Under the applicable Atomic Law, every organisation conducting activities involving exposure to ionising radiation requires the appropriate authorisation, notification or registration. In many cases, RPO supervision of radiological protection within the organisation is mandatory.
