Magnetic particle testing MT
A surface method for detecting discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials — fast, dependable and widely used in welding and foundry work.

Our equipment at work
Magnetic particle testing with full equipment
X-TEST has a complete set of magnetic particle testing equipment: from yoke flaw detectors and AC/DC current units to mobile MPI benches that work both on site and in the production hall.
We use both colour-contrast magnetic suspensions, visible in white light, and fluorescent ones under UV — which reveals even very fine surface and subsurface discontinuities.
Get in touchAbout magnetic particle testing
Magnetic particle testing (MT) detects surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials.
Method characteristics
Magnetic particle testing relies on magnetic flux leakage at a discontinuity. The method detects discontinuities at the surface and a short distance below it in ferromagnetic materials.
How it works
The component is magnetised and a detection medium (an oil- or water-based suspension) containing ferromagnetic particles is applied to its surface. At a discontinuity a leakage field forms, attracting the particles into a visible indication. Evaluation takes place under white light or in a darkened area using UV-A radiation.
Advantages of the method
- High sensitivity to surface indications
- Detects near-surface discontinuities
- Fast inspection
- Suitable for components of complex geometry
- Works both in the laboratory and on site
- Colour-contrast and fluorescent techniques available
MT techniques we use
Flux technique
Magnetisation with a yoke or a coil
The magnetic field is introduced into the component with an electromagnetic yoke or a coil. The technique allows local testing of components of various geometries and is particularly useful for inspecting welded joints and for work on site.
Equipment used:
- AC/DC electromagnetic yokes
- Rigid and flexible coils
- Colour-contrast and fluorescent detection media
Typical applications:
- Welded joints, castings and forgings
- Components of complex geometry
- Laboratory and on-site testing
Current technique
Magnetisation by current flow
Electric current flowing through the component generates a magnetic field around it. The technique is particularly useful for detecting discontinuities oriented perpendicular to the magnetic field.
Equipment used:
- AC/DC current units
- Contact electrodes / contact systems
Typical applications:
- Shafts and cylindrical components
- Pipes
- Forgings
- Elongated components
Combined technique
Magnetic bench
A magnetic bench magnetises the component in different directions, for example by current flow and by the field of a coil. This makes it possible to find discontinuities of different orientations in a single inspection.
Equipment:
- Magnetic bench
- Current flow circuit
- Coil for longitudinal magnetisation
- Adjustable magnetisation parameters
- White and UV-A lighting
Detection media:
- Colour-contrast suspensions for evaluation under white light
- Fluorescent suspensions for evaluation under UV-A radiation
- Dry powders
Applications:
- Series testing of castings and forgings
- Machine components
- Welded joints
- Testing to the relevant standards and procedures
