Inspection without shutting the plant down
A shutdown costs more than the inspection, so thickness readings and weld checks are increasingly taken hot. An ordinary probe loses its properties on such a surface: the bond and the backing will not survive the heat and the element drifts. High temperature probes are built from thermally resistant materials and work in a duty cycle — applied briefly, then allowed to cool.
| Variant | Surface temperature | Single application |
|---|---|---|
| HT1, ZH type | up to 170°C | max. 10 minutes |
| HT2, ZH type | up to 500°C | max. 10 minutes |
| HT1, AH type | up to 130°C | max. 10 minutes |
| HT2, AH type | up to 270°C | max. 10 minutes |
| phased array high temperature series with a high temperature wedge | up to 260°C | continuous operation |
What to watch when measuring hot
Sound velocity in steel drops as temperature rises, so a reading taken on a hot wall overstates the thickness if the instrument holds the velocity for cold material. The correction is applied either by calibrating on a block at the same temperature or through a factor given in the procedure. For corrosion monitoring this is critical: readings from successive years are compared, so the measurement conditions have to match.
The second issue is the couplant — ordinary gel evaporates. High temperature couplants are selected for the range, and the delay line is treated as a consumable. The third is safety: gloves, shields and cooling breaks written into the instruction rather than improvised on site.
Frequently asked questions
Can we inspect without taking the plant out of service?
Yes — that is what the phased array high temperature probe with a high temperature wedge is for, allowing continuous work on surfaces up to 260°C. Above that you work intermittently with HT2 probes and cooling intervals.
Do thickness readings need converting?
Yes, if the calibration was done cold. The simplest route is to calibrate on a block heated to the temperature of the object; the correction is then already in the velocity setting. When documenting results, record the surface temperature alongside the reading.
Which couplant for high temperature?
It is selected for the temperature range and the material; ordinary water-based gels evaporate below 100°C. We supply a couplant matched to the declared working range with the probe.
