Inspection without couplant: air-coupled probes

Some materials must not get wet, and on some products couplant is a production problem: cored composites, porous materials, food and pharmaceutical goods, parts waiting to be bonded or painted. Air-coupled probes were built for them. Air-coupled ACU probes work at 250 and 420 kHz with a 24 mm active aperture, as a transmitter and receiver pair, with an optional built-in 60 dB amplifier and USB interface. Focused versions and versions for water-mist operation are made to order.

Probes built to order

Designing unusual probes has been this manufacturer's strength from the start, and it is a real advantage: instead of fitting the inspection to a catalogue, the probe is built around the part. The custom probe range includes a variable angle probe adjustable from 0 to 90° for trying out parameters before a design is fixed, a 1T3R arrangement for automated plate inspection in steel mills, a probe for hollow axles used in rail, an industrial wheel probe, versions with water flooding through a cone, and hollow focused and low frequency probes.

A category of its own are spot welding probes: an 8 × 8 array, that is 64 elements, working in transmit-receive mode. One placement shows the condition of the entire weld nugget, and the replaceable delay block removes the near-field dead zone — hence their place in resistance spot weld inspection in automotive work.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need to quote a custom probe?

The material and its thickness, the geometry of the inspection area including radii, the expected type and orientation of discontinuities, the surface temperature, the acceptance standard, and the flaw detector model with its connector type. The manufacturer proposes a design on that basis, and we check whether a catalogue probe from Ultrasonic probes would do the same job more simply.

Can you match an equivalent of another brand's probe?

Usually yes — what counts is frequency, element size, angle, housing type and connector, not the catalogue name. Send us the designation of the probe you have and we will check what corresponds to it in the Doppler range.

Are ACU probes suitable for finding delaminations?

Yes, in through-transmission that is the typical application on composites and sandwich structures. Expect a large energy loss at each air-to-material interface, hence the low frequency and the amplifier in the receiving path.
